White Grey Lens
Female vaginal discharge is quite normal, but some women have a heavier discharge which fluctuates around their monthly menstrual cycle.
Here are various ways to control vaginal discharge:
1. Wear cotton underwear because it will help you absorb moisture and because “cotton breathes,” it will allow air to circulate down there.
2. Do not douche all the time, because doing this on a regular basis will only alter the pH balance of the vagina.
3. Do not use vaginal deodorants and sprays; yes, these products will make your womanly area smell nice but (there is always a but) they usually cause irritation.
4. Always use un-scented tissue/toilet paper because perfumes can cause irritation and actually increase vaginal discharge
5. See your physician if you notice that your vaginal discharge is becoming heavier than usual because this could be a sign of infection.
6. Change your brand of oral contraceptives if you notice that your vaginal discharge has suddenly increased when you started taking them.
7. Wash your vagina with anti-bacteria soap, doing this will keep your vagina clean and control discharge
8. Do not wear underwear made of nylon fabric.
Discharges Caused By Infection
Women often experience discharges that are caused vaginal infections. There are three most common vaginal infections that affect women, namely:
i. Bacterial Vaginosis: the cause of this infection is not known, it usually affects women who have multiple sex partners or who receive oral sex. The symptoms of this infection include:-
• Increased vaginal discharge
• Vaginal discharge is followed by itchiness, soreness or rash
• Burning sensation on the skin during urination
• Grey/white discharge with pungent smell
• Cottage cheese-like discharge.
ii. Trichomoniasis: a one-celled protozoan organism is known to cause this infection. This infection is mostly spread through sexual intercourse it can also be spread through wet towels and bathing suits from one person to another. The symptoms of trichomoniasis are:-
• Increased amount of (pungent) discharge
• Constant urination
• Yellow/green, foamy discharge
• Swelling of the vagina
• Itchiness
iii. Yeast Infection: this is the most common infection that affects women; it is not a sexually transmitted disease (STD). It is caused by overabundance of yeast which caused by the change in the pH balance of the vagina. The symptoms of yeast infection are:-
• Increased amount of vaginal discharge
• Itchiness, burning sensation in the vaginal area and redness
• Cottage cheese-like discharge
Causes of yeast infection include:-
a. Stress
b. Pregnancy
c. Antibiotics
d. Diabetes
e. Oral contraceptives
f. Diet (eating foods that contain yeast)
Because yeast infection is not sexually transmitted, there are foods that you eat that actually cause you to have yeast infection. Foods like these should be avoided:-
• Red meat
• Breads
• Processed foods
• Mushrooms
• Fermented food products
These foods contain yeast which can cause yeast infection.
Here are some examples of foods that you can eat:
• Garlic
• Millet
• Onions
• Lemons and limes
• Oranges, grape fruits
• Cranberries
• Brown rice
• Vinegar
• Curd
• Yoghurt (un-sweetened)
• Vegetables
• Curd
• Oregano
